What is scypha?
Scypha is commonly called “sycon“. Genus of marine sponges. Characterized by a fingerlike body shape known as the syconoid type of structure.
Habitat : It is marine, sedentry colonical sponge found attached to rocks etc. Below low tide mark. It is commonly called sycon or urn sponge.
Habits :
Locomotion: It is absent to sedentry mode of life.
Feeding: It is omnivorous and feeds upon planktons and organic particles. Digestion ios intracellular.
Reproduction: Asexual reproduction occurs by external budding. Sexual reproduction. Scypha is bisexual. It is always show cross fertilization due to protogyny. Fertilization is internal.
Economic importance: It is a type study animal of porifera .
Morphology: Vace like colonical sponges.
Numerous small sized pores called dermal ostia on body surface and single large osculum at the tip of each branch.
